Mental Health Action Team

Meeting Minutes

Time of Meeting: 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.

Location of Meeting: Center for Urban Population Health

Present:  Melissa Waldo, SSCHC;  Luke Waldo, Sojourner Family Peace Center; Sylvia Cortez, Milwaukee County Behavioral Health Division; Ursula Flores, Crisis Resource Center; Stephanie Calloway, Proyecto Salud; Martina Gollin-Graves, Mental Health America of Wisconsin; Peter Hoeffel, NAMI-Greater Milwaukee; Abraham Calleros, UMOS.

Announcements

  • Peter: Comments were made to WarmLine that Spanish-speaking services are needed.
  • Peter: “Suicide is Preventable” brochure to be translated to Spanish.
  • Peter: NAMI has hired a Spanish-speaking Public Allies fellow.
  • Stephanie: Next General Coalition Meeting (September 9th) will present revamped website that will hopefully be more collaborative with the Action Teams.

WarmLine follow-up

  • Ursula connected with Lynn Malofsky regarding WarmLine; however, she is currently on medical leave and therefore puts a hold on plans.
  • Leslie contacted the Consulate regarding LocaTel, but hasn’t received a response.
  • Latino Global International may also be an option. Abraham would be the contact person.

Letter from Milwaukee County Behavioral Health Department: Our understanding, confusion, concerns, and proposals

  • AE can only be accessed by individuals under 21 and over 65.
  • If MHAT responds to letter, we could use examples from clients where the sliding scale wasn’t applied.
  • Does suicidality fall under “emergency medical condition”?
  • Does psychiatric = medical?
  • If someone has an ITIN and is paying taxes, why can’t they receive the same benefits as someone with an SSN?
  • Melissa will draft another letter with a scenario(s) of a client with a medical (physical) and psychiatric condition along with our questions and concerns.  She will first contact the state to clarify AE policies (as BHD may simply be following, not interpreting the state/federal policies rather than not implementing them correctly).
  • Sylvia:  Could we do cultural sensitivity training with fiscal employees at BHD?  None are Spanish-speaking, and therefore must work through interpreters.

Other notes

  • Leslie did cultural sensitivity training with psychiatric social workers and mobile crisis team at BHD.

Action Items

  • Melissa: draft second letter.

Next Meeting

Thursday, August 15, 9:00-10:30 a.m., at the Center for Urban Population Health.

Minutes submitted by Luke Waldo.
