Mental Health Action Team  (MHAT) of the Milwaukee Latino Health Coalition

Meeting Minutes: November 19, 2009

In attendance: Stephanie Calloway, Martina Gollin-Graves, Luke Waldo, Terrie Garcia, Gabriela Dieguez, Peter Hoeffel, Katherine Valentyn, Ruth Ann Belknap, Leslie Davis and Marie Bar (graduate student in France, interning with Leslie)

  • Good News was shared that the County Budget with mental health and addiction treatment services, was restored fully.
  • Gratitude to Martina for nominating MHAT for the MHA award for exemplary work. MHA Luncheon on December 8th, two free tickets available to be utilized Katherine and Terrie. Otherwise, seats are $50 each or that amount can be “donated” to “invisible children” program.
  • Jim Kubicek’s assistant Althea has not phoned to reschedule meeting so Katherine plans to follow this up.
  • Another focus group to be held with Gabriela and 16th St. on December 4
  • Peter reported on existence of Spanish-speaking “Peer Specialists”, as many as 5 who have been trained and certified by the state and currently not employed. Peter is proposing to Jim Kubicek that they be utilized on inpatient units and he asks that we reinforce this at our meeting with him. Peter also will follow up with Our Space about identifying these folks. Group generated various ideas today about how to potentially utilize these folks aside from at county, eg, in Spanish Warmline program.
  • MHA Bookmark draft reviewed today, numbers added, Leslie to revise and submit to Cara and Martina.
  • Managed Health Services to be “bought out”
  • Mental Health Redesign feedback forms were reviewed briefly and Gabriela and Leslie offered to review and summarize. Katherine will contact Consultants and ask them to keep our team “in the loop” as they review and she will also ask them to translate into Spanish.
  • Time Bank “banco de tiempo”: Stephanie Calloway reported on the orientation meeting she attended. Group today ultimately decided that while it may have promise for Latino community, it is outside of scope of MHAT mission.
  • January MHAT meeting to involve further Brainstorm around priorities. Tentative areas of future work: Advocacy (with which institutions?), Education (eg, Speaker’s Bureau), Community Support (eg, Warmline), Community Advisory Group (eg, Depression research with UWM and 16th St)
  • No MHAT meeting in December. Next meeting: January 28, 2010, 9-10:30 a.m., Center for Urban Population Health.
  • Milwaukee Mental Health Task Force meeting—Tues, Jan. 12, 3-5 p.m.  Leslie will attend.

Respectfully submitted, Leslie Davis
