Location of meeting: Center for Urban Population Health

Present: Katherine Valentyn, Gabriela Dieguez, Terrie Garcia, Leslie Davis, Ruth Ann Belknap, Abraham Calleros, and Luke Waldo.

  • Latino Solidarity Day is this weekend.  Terrie will be speaking on Hispanic health.
  • UMOS (on Chase) will hold a rummage sale on 10/16 and 10/17 to benefit the HIV program.
  • Team’s meeting with Milwaukee County Behavioral Health Department will be 9/30/09 at 10:30am.
    • Leslie, Katherine, and Gabriela will attend.  Brenda, Peter, and Terrie are a maybe.
    • Objectives: What services does the MCBHD provide in Spanish?  How are they provided?  Are they offered during all shifts?  What are the requirements for admissions?  Are there resources and literature in Spanish?  What is the billing process like?  How do we improve bridging our services?  What is the discharge policy?  Where are clients referred upon discharge?  How can we serve you (eg. Information, access to population)?
      • Katherine will bring MLHC documentation so MCBHD recognizes the Coalition.
      • Leslie has concerns about the Bureau of Milwaukee Child Welfare and their Initial Assessment workers asking families about their immigration status.
        • Leslie has been in contact with Sue Conwell and Voces de la Frontera.  She is waiting for a response.  Luke would be happy to join Leslie and Voces to offer trainings to BMCW.
        • Immigration status is often an obstacle for clients and should be a centerpiece for the Mental Health Action Team when advocating for clients.  Jean Geraci from Voces would be interested in participating in our meetings.
        • Redesigning the Adult Mental Health System in Milwaukee County
          • Community Meeting on 10/20/09 @ 4pm at Café El Sol.
          • Barbara Beckert from Disability Rights of Wisconsin and Milwaukee Mental Health Task Force is spearheading the meetings.
          • Terrie will share the flyer/information at the Latino Solidarity presentation.
          • Target audience: mental health consumers or prospective consumers.
          • Target number of community members that our Action Team members commit to bringing to the meeting: 5
          • Meeting will be done in Spanish and English.
            • Katherine will contact Barbara regarding the headsets.
            • Gabriela will be the simultaneous interpreter/presenter.
            • The consultants/project may have money to translate the Power Point and other literature (agenda, feedback form).
            • The Power Point needs to be condensed.  Terrie, Katherine and Gabriela will condense it.
  • Examples need to be added to the “Mental Health system” on the feedback sheet.
  • Format of the meeting (eg small groups, etc.) and group members’ responsibilities will be addressed at the next meeting on Monday, Oct. 5th.
  • Ruth Ann and Abraham will attend the next Milwaukee Mental Health Task Force meeting on 10-13-09.
  • Next Mental Health Action Team meeting (regular meeting): Thursday, Oct. 22, 9-10:30 a.m., at the Center for Urban Population Health.
