Proposal from UWM and SSCHC:

  • § This collaboration has been in place for about 5 years; they have recently received NIH funding for the next three years.
  • § Goal: To create a culturally-sensitive, manualized behavior therapy treatment for Latino depression.
  • § They are asking this Action Team to offer oversight and input as the project begins and is implemented.
    • This is NOT a requirement of the grant, wouldn’t be a large time commitment for the group.
    • The role is not set in stone- could be what we’d want it to be.
  • § Overview of Project/Timeline
    • Phase 1 (first year): Community input/review
      • Hold 6 focus group with Latinos: 3 women groups, 3 men
        • Show snippets of treatment process
        • Discuss/get feedback from community
        • Run sample cases with 16th Street Clinic to test-run
    • Phase 2 (second year): Implementation of therapy
      • Enroll about 48 depressed clients in treatment: randomized to receive ‘standard’ treatment or culturally-sensitive treatment
        • 12 sessions over 21 weeks (or less)
        • Measurements include: depression symptoms, quality of life, physical symptoms
          • Measured pre-treatment, week 10, week 12
    • Phase 3: Follow-up/Evaluation
      • 6 month follow-up interview with participants
      • Look at results, tweak and develop treatment manual
  • § Potential things that may arise during study include DV, suicide – this would be opportunity for Action Team to scrutinize the researchers’ actions and provide feedback/guidance.
  • § Action Team members present agreed this sounds like a good opportunity and is considering moving forward with this opportunity.
    • Will check in with absent members
    • Consider what our role should be, possibly involving Proyecto Salud health promoters in the process

Mental Health Association of Wisconsin Resource Directory

  • § Martina proposed a section in the printed directory titled Spanish Services – we could only have 2 pages for this section, however.
    • If an agency is not in the book, they would be listed in the Spanish section
    • If they are already in book, will be listed with reference to other page
  • § We will get deadline from Cara (MHA) for submissions to the online directory at our next meeting
    • Consider which agencies we want to be sure to include in the online directory
  • § For our next meeting, please visit the MHA online directory to be familiar with layout.

Next Meeting: Thursday, June 25th, 9-10:30am
