Meeting Notes

Members present: Virginia Zerpa-Uriona, Ruth Ann Belknap, Katherine Valentyn, Gabriela Diéguez, Leslie Davis, Stephanie Calloway

Announcements:

  • Milwaukee Latino Health Coalition large group meeting on Thursday, Feb. 12, 3:00-5:00 p.m., at CORE/El Centro.  Is Immigration a Health Issue?  Very fascinating forum!  Hope to see you there!
  • Virginia announced that SSCHC is applying for the RWJ grant “Salud America,” addressing childhood obesity.  They have asked for the support of the MLHC, so Virginia will bring it to the Steering Committee.

Discussion of Interviews:

Some members were able to complete the interviews, and some were not.  Tatiana (who was not present but wrote comments on her interview) said it went quickly in person because the interviewee could see the table.  Katherine said the table was tricky when there is only one Spanish-speaking staff who is in charge of various programs.  We continued discussing the table and other components of the survey, and we made a few changes which are reflected in the updated survey.  Virginia made a suggestion to check out the website of the agency before the interview, so that some of the logistics questions can already be filled in.  Then we can just ask if the information is current.

The members who were present at the meeting chose new agencies to interview.  We will try to interview that agency before our next meeting in February.  Even though this is a time-intensive process, we see the value in doing a face-to-face interview and making those connections on behalf of the Coalition.

Changing the name for our work group:

We discussed changing our name.  Virginia suggested that the groups use the term “action team” instead of “work group.”  This topic will be discussed at the Steering Committee Retreat on Jan. 30-31.  The following are some of the names/words we talked about:

Mental Health Promoters

Community Mental Health Promotion Work Group

Community Mental Health Action Team

We will brainstorm more ideas over e-mail for our group name.  If possible, we will take a vote over e-mail.  But if not, we will vote at our Feb. meeting.
