The Access to Health Care Action Team has ceased meetings temporarily. We have realized that there is more to health than health care. Decades of research and volumes of scholarly articles have documented that people’s health and chances of becoming sick and dying early are greatly influenced by powerful social factors such as education, income, nutrition, housing and neighborhoods. Yet, according to author Dennis Raphael, this important work has had little penetration into, and less impact upon, public health activities in the United States. (The article can be found in our website: Shaping Public Policy and Population Health in the United States: Why is the Public Health Community Missing in Action?).
Thus the Access to Health Care Action Team has researched, reflected and taken the time to shift to a new challenge and focus. We will create venues to transfer this knowledge in order to motivate and activate the citizens of Milwaukee. Empowered with information, we will identify means to influence policies that address the political and economic forces that shape the health of our community. We are looking for motivated people interest in committing their time to this effort. Contact Virginia Zerpa-Uriona at firstname.lastname@example.org or 414-219-7836.
